Washington DC is groot, met brede lange straten, veel groen, statige gebouwen, monumenten en het is plakkerig warm met temperaturen rond de 30 graden en een hoge luchtvochtigheid.
Gelukkig zijn er de gratis top musea om de heetste uren van de dag in door te brengen.

Mijn eerste keus was het American History Museum. En om het baltimore verhaal van fort McHenry af te maken, was daar de originele star-sprangled-banner.
De rest van het museum biedt pop culture, de civilrights movement, presidenten en de vele oorlogen waar het (jonge) land bij betrokken is.

Een ander populair museum is het air and space museum. Complete vliegtuigen, waaronder die van de gebroeders Wright (uitvinders van de moderne vliegtuigen). En objecten din de ruimte gezweefd hebben of er vandaan komen. Zand van de maan bijvoorbeeld.
Gisteren heb ik nog zo'n enorm museum bezocht. Het american art museum and portrait gallery. Prachtige landschappen en portretten van culturele iconen uit de 20ste eeuw.

Als het dan enigszins begint af te koelen, dan zijn de vele monumenten en memorials het vele wandelen waard. Het capitool, het witte huis, lincoln memorial en het ingetogen, maar indrukwekkende pentagon memorial. Wat zo'n beetje de enige plek is waar he in de buurt van het pentagon wel foto's mag maken.
Nog 3 dagen om de rest van deze stad te ontdekken voordat ik op de nachttrein naar Boston stap.

Washington DC is big, with broad, long lanes, lots of green, museums, monuments and sticky hot temperatures around 30 degrees celcius and very humid. Thankfully there are the many free museums to spend the hottest hours of the day.

My first stop is the American history museum.  It completes the story started in Baltimore,  the real star-sprangled-banner from Fort McHenry. The rest of the museum is dedicated to pop culture, presidents, the civil rights movement and tye many wars that this relatively young country has fought.

Another popular museum is the air and space museum.  Complete airplanes are in display here, including the one from the Wright brothers, inventors of modern aircrafts.
And things that wrnt to soace, or that were taken from space. Like sand from the moon.

Yesterday I visited the american art and portrait gallery. Beautiful landscapes and portraits of cultural icons of the 20th century.
When it finally starts to cool down slightly, it is well worth to do a long walk around the many monuments and memorials. The capitol, the white house, lincoln memorial and the quiet pentagon memorial. Basically the only where you are aloud to take pictures near the pentagon.
3 more days to enjoy this city before I board a night train to Boston.
