Nog één weekje Nederland

My bicycle last Summer is on the right

----------------------------
Quickly return to the supermarket for a forgotten ingredient, the best way to wake up on my way to the train station in the morning, visiting friends....While it's missing one of its breaks, borth lights are broken, I'm stuck in second gear for ages and the chain is having trouble sliding smoothly over it's wheel. My day to day bicycle is one of the things that I'll miss when I leave on my round the world trip in a week.

Also on the miss-list: snacking from the hole in the wall and relaxing in our nice back yard (including some chicken poking around, now!). Luckily, there are some opportunities to hire a bicycle here and there, I can't wait to try out new snack and a view from the beach or a mountaintop isn't a bad thing to look forward to.

But I will have to say goodbye to my irreplaceable family and friends in The Netherlands. Because Skype, mail and whats app only get you so far. Saying goodby will be a returning theme during my last week at home. As well as organizing, cleaning and sorting out the last things before leaving.

Reistrucjes - Travel Tricks

This is my bilingual travel blog, please scroll down for the English post.

Fijn paasweekend!

-------------------------------
Since I bought my ticket(s) for my travels I've been a frequent outdoor store visitor and client in Utrecht, the biggest city nearby PerryBeverKathmandu are the ones to go to. They all over the same gear although they do not offer all the same brands and somethimes you're better off at another store when there's a special offer. So, here are my favorite packing favorites.

I like space saving things. Such as the collapsible mug from Sea to Summit (Bever). Or the collapsible OhYo bottle that I bought. 500 ml and collaped it fits right in my hand. Extra plus: dishwasher proof. The only downside I've found is that the 'straw' on top is not a drinking straw (way to short) and for the other function of letting all the air in or out, I find it a little too small. I just remove the top instead which works fine.

Another essential to save space in my backpack are the packing cubes. I liked This set from Design and go at Perry to figure out wheter I liked it. Once it proved its value I bought two Eagle creek half cubes. It sounds a little odd to put your clothes in a small bag and then put that bag into your main bag. Because that's what packing cubes do. But it works. It is the only reason I could fit:
  • 6 shirts,
  • 1 pants,
  • Thick legging
  • sleeping set
  • underwear
  • rain coat
  • 2 towels
  • cup
  • wash bag
  • and a sleeping bag
in my Deuter Futura (20 liter). I just have to figure something out for that big and bulky sleeping pad. The love-bag on the photo was filled with food, a book, camera, wallet, mobile phone plus charger.

Also the Spork is a good travel compagnion. The one I got for free a while ago, didn't survive the canned food in Strasbourg, but I got myself a new one righ away because they're so handy.

And I like the compackt travel towels. Such as this one from Sea to Summit. 60x121 cm in a small pouch (fits right in my hand). I do have to admit  that it's a tight fit to get the thing back into the that little bag. But it works.

The 5in1 adaptor is hopefully going to help my to use my tablet as a laptop (and to back up my photo's on the road).

The Scrubba bag is not available in stores in The Netherlands yet, but I have spotted it on the website of the outdoorstore in Canada (MEC,) The difference with a normal drybag? There's a built in wash board. Check their YouTube channel, these guys have been testing this thing on the road (like next to a road or on a train and on board of an airplane).

I'm always in for some more travel and packing tips. So, if you have any share them in the comments below.
Happy Easter!

Nog maar een maandje! - Just one month to go!

This is my bilingual travel blog, please scroll down for the English post.

25. Test-skypen met thuis
26. Hostel/Couchsurf adresjes in USA (hoogseizoen)

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Time goes by so fast. And it seems to only speed up recently.
Slowly I start to realize that my world travel is no longer a dream or a plan, it's going to be real. I'm really going to do it. When people ask me what I'm going to do when my working contract ends, I usually answer that I'll go travel. Saying I go on a RoundTheWorld-trip feels like I have some left over money. Which isn't the case, I'm happily working and saving for the big goal. But I admit that next to a thoughtfully made choice, it is a luxury indeed.

The past weeks I've been crossing things from my to-do-list. The best thing was Indoor Skydiving, by far. The worst was removing my wisdom tooth (third molar). There's one more to go later this week.

A short update on my 30 things on my to-do-list (in no particular order):
1. Clean-up mailbox (unsubscribe from newsletters and there's probably an email or two or more that should be deleted already)
2. Suspend my train-subscribtion (why keep it if you won't use it?)
3. Make photobook of 2013 (should be done by now...) almost done!
4. Celebrate the first Kingsday in The Netherlands (we had Queensday on the 30th of April ever since I was little. Kingsday will be on 26th of April this year, because the offical Kingsday (27th) is a Sunday this year. It's confusing, I know).
5. Dentist, well almost done, I wrote about that above.
6. Contact lenses
7. Book my return flight (the plan is to come back home, of course!)
I will land on Dutch ground in December!
8. Work my office hours...
9. ...and keep saving money
10. Vaccins, there's one more to go.
11. Indoor Skydive (I got as a birthday gift!)
12. Railpass Japan (Order from 3 months in advance, only from outside of Japan and your pass comes by good old post), I changed plans when I discovered I can also pick up a pass at Japanese travel organizations in the USA.
13. Get a playlist for travelling - check on the right on my blog. I made a playlist on spotify. Let me know your music tips :).
14. Clean up my room
15. collect a First Aid kit (medicins, plasters...)
16. Note the bank before I leave (so they won't block my card)
17. Note the creditcard company before I leave (see point 16)
18. Currency extchange (but not all at the same time, there are ATM's abroad too)
19. Passport photo's (just in case)
20. Stay fit (and get a even more fit, for the walking and lifting the bags)
21. Eat at least a Kroket and a Stamppot, at least once before I leave ("kroket" and "Stamppot" are Dutch snacks/meals)
22. Go to the concert of Marike Jager (Dutch Singer-songwriter)
23. Visum USA (Esta)
24. Travel insurance (travelling longer than 60 days, so my average insurance isn't enough to cover this longterm travel)
25. Testing Skype at home
26. Host/couchsurf addresses in the USA (I'll be there peak season)
27. Download travel apps for my phone and tablet (any suggestions? It's Android by the way!)
28. My travelinformation for my family at home
29. Make copies and prints of my passport, reservations and tickets
30. Most important of all of the above: enjoy my time at home!

Omrekenhulpje voor op reis - Converting units on the road

This is my bilingual travel blog, so please scroll down for the English post.

--------------------------------------------------------
While I was flipping through my travel guides, I ran into a handy temperature table. In Fahrenheid that was. Included, of course was the formula to the math to Celcius, but I'm a mess with math. Apart from temperature I guess I will run into more units to be converted during my world travel. Such as miles versus kilometers, inches in stead of centimeters and differences in clothing sizes.

I do have some helpful apps on my smartphone to do the job for me, but to grab my phone for every single thing I encounter... Not practical at all.
My solution: the old school cheat sheet with some rough measurements that will come in handy while traveling.

I have taken my planned itinerary as a base. So, American and Japanese sizes, just in case I added British units as well.
Click to download, print (pdf-A4 size) and take it with you on the road.

Inspiratie voor mijn rugzak - Inspiration to take on the road

This is my bilingual travel blog, so please scroll down for the English post.

---------------------------------------------

A few weeks ago I posted my to-do-list. I'm crossing things off now and then (and adding new things too at the same time).
One of the things on the list was a birthday present: Indoor skydiven! In The Netherlands, there's only one place to that: Roosendaal (not too far from Rotterdam). It took me some time to get there, but it was well worth the 3x three very thrilling, beautifull minutes.

I also ran into the beautiful text below. It's my travel motto!
But there are a few others I'll take with me in my pack.

Also, I've been interviewed by the Dutch travel blog Backpackgek.nl.

Travel quoteTuimeltekst Dance, don't fight with your fait
- Translation: Dance, don't fight with your faith. It's for those moments that life doesn't go as planned (which isn't a bad thing, always).

Travel quote to pack for round the world trip
- Somethimes I find it hard to ask other people for help, but it's something I learned while travelling.

travel quote to pack for travel round the world.
- Just surrender myself to travelling. 'be in the moment' I need reminders for that.
- This one, I ran into, last year on my way to London. It fit's well with the quote above. Exeptions are made for catching airplanes and (reserved) trains. sharethebrightsideoflive.blogspot.nl is my other blog (in English only) where I share some of my creative products (drawings, crochet) and daily life.

Spaartips voor op reis - Tips on saving money for travel

This is my bilingual travel blog, so please scroll down for the English post

saving money travel tips budget
"Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer." I couldn´t find who´s the genius who every said these words, but to me it´s a truth to live by. Travelling may leave you an empty wallet but your backpack is filled with lessons for life, personal knowledge and countless memories.
So, we´re talking money today. Which to me means: work hard and save as much as possible. Or win the lotterly, but because there's such huge lucky-factor involved here, I share the saving tips that helped me through the past year and I'm living by the last few months at home.

1. Set your big saving goal
Do some (online) research and ask friends and family to the expected costs of your destination(s). Then, set your (minimal) saving goal. Look at it this way, your saving goal is on top of a mountain. After some hard work you get a breathtaking view in return, or in this case you get to actually do your travelling.

2. small wins
My RTW-saving goal is on the higher end. Mainly because I stringed together quite some relatively expensive countries. And because it takes quite a while to get to my goal, I set a few small winning moments in between. Like reaching my (estimated) ticket cost, travelbudget for a destiniation or an activity that's on my wishlist.

3.  You're doing it for a good cause...
This is my motto when I walk through a shop(ping street). Every Euro I don't spent is one in the pocket. One pair of jeans could be a night of sleep during my travel. That might sound a bit extreme, but it worked for me.  I could walk out of a store without the jeans and still have huge smile on my face.

4. Less-often
Saying 'no' to everything isn't healthy for your wellbeing. So, complementary to the the-good-cause-motto, I live by a less-often-motto. That differs per person. For me it means less concerts, going out for dinner and almost not buying clothes, bags, cds and dvds. I am aware that the latter should be swopped for less downloading for most people, but I love these slices of entertainment.
The dinners and the bags are the hardest for me. The bags I have a weak spot for, but I'm starting to overcome my slight bag addiction. The dinners are mainly less frequent. And in the past year I've become a fan of cooking and dining at home with friends. Saving money and as much having fun.

5. Big clean up
I love coming home to find it all tidy and clean. So, I started cleaning up before travelling. And I found some stuff to sell online along the way. Also, clean up your subscribtions. The ones you pay too much for and/or the ones you won't be using while you're away anyway. As soon as possible I cut down my mobile phone subscription to a more reasonable price (which saved me half the money!). Others in the compartment: the gym, library, transport (train in my case), magazines, papers.

----------------

It's less than 3 months before I'll be taking off for my big journey! Wasn't it 5 months, last month? My mistake, I'm bad with the numbers.
There's still plenty to do in the mean time, 30 things on my to-do-list for the comming months (in no particular order).

And keep blogging of course! I have a great adventure ahead, but also I shouldn't forget I also have made some great trips in the past. In the next months I hope I can also, share a few good travel memories with you!

Wereldreis route - RTW-route planning

route, wereldreis, rtw-route, round the world route, overland,

This is my bilingual travel blog, please scroll down for the English post.

September and October

-----------------

How do you plan a RTW-trip? It's a personal thing. Of course it al starts with collecting all dream destinations.  Some people then take off  on a one-way-ticket to their first destination. And  however that does sound awesome to me, I needed a little more structure.
So, with my list of dream destination, I started  to shuffle, scrap and (re-)add and in the end left some bits open.  Earlier this monthI revealed a bit of my route. My resulting route strings together pretty much all relatively expensive destinations. That was  not on purpose. But I believe you yourself are in charge of your travel budget. For me, that will be this year's challenge.

So, where am I going?

May
Iceland didn't make the cut the first time around. But then it turned out to be an easy stop-over on my way to Canada. Without much thinking it was back on my itinerary. So, Reykjavik is my first stop on my RTW-trip. I've chosen a few days halfway May. Just before the peak season. That has advantages such as slightly lower prices on accommodation and entrance fees, but of course there are disadvantages too. Iceland  is not in full blown tourist mode, just yet, like offering some specific extra bus services (as for a person who does not have a drivers license (yet)  that's not ideal). But there are plenty of excursions and beautiful spots to chose from...

May until (beginning of) June
A plane takes me to Canada. A huge country, which means I had to make choices. I'll be discovering (little parts of) Ontario and Quebec provinces. It's on me how to get from point A (Toronto) to point B (Montréal).

June, July and a few days in August
My next stop is another outstretched country: The United States of America. I'll arrive in New York. Even before I booked my tickets, I knew I wanted to travel the USA by train.
The first month I'll spend on the East-coast with the intention to celebrate Independence Day in the historic city of Boston.
From there, I'll start my big trek West, via Chicago to San Francisco. The latter being the starting point for my organized group travelling. Via Yosminte National Park to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park and  travelling via the last part of the original Route 66 to Los Angeles. Before moving on to Japan, I'll spend a few days relaxing  in Hawaii.

August
So After Hawaii comes Japan. I've read some books and seen some movies, but I don't knwo what to expect. Which I'm ok with. For foreign visitors there's a special, relatively cheap train pass available. So, Japan is also on my railing-list. I don't have a planned route, but next to my arrival city of Tokyo, Nagano, Kyoto and Hiroshima are high on my wish-list.

September
Just for the sake of being nearby, South-Korea ended up on my itinerary. This is my mystery-box on my route. I don't know what to expect and what I want to do here. Except there's one thing on my wishlist. Visiting the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). The border area of North and South- Korea. It's not necessarily a fun thing, but it sure is interesting.

September to October
Half way September I'll kind of come home in Taiwan, the country I was born. I've been here before, most recently last year to celebrate Chinese New Year. I'll be welcoming my Taiwanese as well as my Dutch family (in October).  Being adopted, these are always special moments.

Right now, my itinerary ends here. Maybe I'll go home, but who knows I might travel a bit more in Asia. It will depend on my budget and my gut feeling.

If you have any tips or suggestions, leave me a comment, they're more than welcome!

10x Reiskriebels: reisgidsen en blogs - 10x get the Travelbugs going: travel guides and blogs

This is my bilingual travel blog, please scroll down for the English post.

---------

A coctail of magazines, travelprogramms, travelguides and the ever expanding internet are sources for inspiration, practical tips and the main reason why my wishlist of travel destinations keeps growing.
My RTW-trip is comming up and on my bedside there's a small pile of travel guides and on my computer I collect inspirational and handy web addresses.
Here are 10 travel guides and blogs that get your travel bugs going (it's a mixture of English and Dutch sources). If you have any tips, leave them in a comment down this post. Next week more on my travel route!
These American travelguides are the best friend of travelers world wide. Practical, and not serving budget backbackers only anymore. Online I love the 'Need to know' and 'Tips and Articles' sections (check in the upper right corner when you've entered a destination). And if there are any travel questions left, I would turn to the travel community on the Thorn Tree Forum.
For my RTW-trip I bought: Iceland, Korea and Discover Canada (the Discover-line have more visuals and are full-colour guides).

2. Rough Guides (English and Dutch)
Rough Guides are also practial and suit all travelbudets. Compared to the Lonely Planet guides, the sights do not have their own subtitles, but are taken in with the text (per province, city, neighbourhood). I also like their maps a little more.
Three years ago, on my first long term solo trip, I lived off my Rough Guide on Taiwan.
While the guides do not have a full colour version, their website is an absolute feast for the eyes (yet practical).
For my RTW-trip I bought: Taiwan (which has already proved to be awesome), Japan and The USA.

3. Dominiscus reisgisden (Dutch)
I'm not sure these guides are available international (send me a note if you find one!).
Especially the 'mapped-series'. If you're planning a city trip, I would recommend these super light-weight guides with fould out maps and pages. Via their website you can also enjoy their free digital magazine which will get your travel bugs going.
For my RTW-trip I was gifted the New York guide.

National Geographic (best know for their fab tc-channel), also publishes beautiful full-colour guides with lots of background information, as well as an  awesome travel magazine with wonderful photo's. Their 'I heart my city' articles are my favorite on their website which is filled with the top of the bill photography.

For more unusual and specific travels. So, for my planned train travel through the United Stad, I was gifted the USA by Rail guide (written by John Pitt) by my parents.

On their blog, Gerard en Kieu share their travel stories (food is the main topic), but I fell in love with their handy, planning, packing and budgetting tips.

This young lady works, saves and travels around the world and then shares great tips and fun and beautiful stories.

That name! I think it's awesome. This Canadian couple backpacks (almost) continiously and share their stories, tips and collect all their knowledge in their Budget guides.

This man is quite well known in the travel community. He even has written some travelbooks. On his website there are many inspirational articles and handy tips.

A little more luxe than the hardcore backpack blogs that fit my budet at the moment. This bloggin' Canadian lady I found while searching for, travel tips and sights to see in, you may guess, Canada.

2014 wordt het jaar van mijn Wereldreis - 2014 is the year of my world trip

This is my biligual travel blog, please scroll down for the Enghlish post.

-----------------------

About a year ago on a winters day in January, I set out my first Google search on round the world ticket. The search results gave me some price indications. Expensive, for sure, but not impossible. Not being a home-owner of any kind, just jet, but having a (temporary) job, I couldn't have asked for a better timing. This is the best moment to go on my RTW-trip.

After 11 months of saving up my money, I booked my world-ticket at Kilroy travel. A 'return'-kind of ticket leaving from Amsterdam for about five to six months to travel Iceland, Canada, USA, Japan, South-Korea and my second home country Taiwan. As a pre-booked ticket is not as flexible as a one-way ticket, it does give me the chance to find out what RTW-traveling is about. That doesn't mean that the one-way ticket is never happening, though!

In exactly 5 months I'll step on my first plane and via my blog I´ll share travel stories, experiences and practical tips. In the mean time, I keep saving money (world travel requiers more than just a ticket...), there's a to do list to check off and I'm on the look out for inspiration in travel guides, blogs and websites. I'll share my favorites next week!

Avontuur in de maak - Adventure in the making

Ik heb de reiskriebels gekregen… In januari 2014 meer!

The travel bug has gotten a grip on me…Comming January 2014!
