Inspiratie voor mijn rugzak - Inspiration to take on the road

Een paar weken geleden postte ik mijn to-do-lijstje. En die ben ik lekker aan het afwerken (en ook alweer aan het aanvullen).

Daar stond ook nog een verjaardagscadeautje op: Indoor skydiven! Dat kan in Nederland alleen in Roosendaal, en dus moest ik er wel even wat reistijd voor uit trekken, maar het waren 3 keer 3 hele mooie, toffe minuten. 

Ik kwam er ook de onderstaande mooie tekst tegen. Mijn nieuwe motto voor op reis!

Maar, ik heb er nog een paar die ik in mijn bagage stop en die deel ik hieronder ook even.

En tot slot, nog meer leuks: ik ben geïnterviewd door Backpackgek.nl! Een leuke site met veel tips, dus als je ook nog op reis gaat, een aanrader!

A few weeks ago I posted my to-do-list. I'm crossing things off now and then (and adding new things too at the same time). 

One of the things on the list was a birthday present: Indoor skydiven! In The Netherlands, there's only one place to that: Roosendaal (not too far from Rotterdam). It took me some time to get there, but it was well worth the 3x three very thrilling, beautifull minutes. 

I also ran into the beautiful text below. It's my travel motto!

But there are a few others I'll take with me in my pack.

Also, I've been interviewed by the Dutch travel blog Backpackgek.nl. 

Deze Tuimeltekst, die handig is voor de momenten dat het even niet gaat zoals gepland (wat niet per definitie iets slechts hoeft te zijn....) kwam ik vorig jaar op het station tegen. Volg ze ook even op twitter, heerlijke eye-openers en hersenkrakers. - Translation: Dance, don't fight with your faith. It's for those moments that life doesn't go as planned (which isn't a bad thing, always).

Vragen, ik vind het soms lastig, maar ik heb het vooral op reis geleerd. - Somethimes I find it hard to ask other people for help, but it's something I learned while travelling.

Overgeven aan reizen, aan 'het moment' en ervan genieten. Daar moet ik mezelf af en toe even aan herinneren.  - Just surrender myself to travelling. 'be in the moment' I need reminders for that.

Deze kwam ik vorig jaar tegen onderweg naar Londen. Aanvullend op de bovenstaande quote. Uitzondering: vliegtuigen en (gereserveerde) treinen. sharethebrightsideoflife.blogspot.nl is mijn andere blog (waar ik af en toe wat creatieve uitspattingen (tekenen en haken) en dagelijkse dingen deel). - This one, I ran into, last year on my way to London. It fit's well with the quote above. Exeptions are made for catching airplanes and (reserved) trains. sharethebrightsideoflive.blogspot.nl is my other blog (in English only) where I share some of my creative products (drawings, crochet) and daily life.

Boeken als inspiratie om op wereldreis te gaan - How two books inspired my RTW-travel

Het thema van de boekenweek 2014 is reizen. En ik kan niet anders zeggen dat boeken(winkels) geweldige manieren zijn om thuis een op reis te gaan. Er zijn voor mij twee boeken die wellicht de zaadjes waren voor mijn wereldreis...Een atlas met stickers en 'paspoort' voor Sinterklaas of een verjaardag  en een examencadeautje bij de uitreiking van mijn middelbare school.

Mijn eerste inspiratie was brandnieuw in 1996 en word inmiddels denk ik niet meer geleverd (volgens bol.com informatie). De Doe-het-zelf Atlas door Sally Hewitt. Geloof het of niet, maar deze atlas heeft mij leren kaartlezen. De pagina's in de atlas waren voorzien van het welbekende raster. En de bijgeleverde stickers waren voorzien van een code: een paginanummer, een letter en een cijfer. Het Witte Huis is zo op pagina 9 in het hokje F5 beland. Zo reisde ik als klein meisje al stickerend en rasterlezend de wereld rond. Onderweg las ik over geisers in IJsland, dat Hawaii bestaat uit vulkanische eilanden en dat ze in Japan rauwe vis eten en dat sushi noemen (bedenk even ik was <10 en kende alleen witte vis en vissticks)...

Jaren later kreeg ik een tweede boek dat mij dat een zaadje legde voor mijn wereldreis: 25 wereldroutes die je gedaan moet hebben, door misschien wel Nederlands bekendste reizigster, Floortje Dessing. Naast inspirerende en vlotgeschreven reisverhalen, las ik in dit boek voor het eerst over een wereldticket. Het wereldticket heb ik inmiddels op zak, de reisverhalen komen eraan!

The theme of our National week of the book 2014 is Travelling. And I have to say, books and bookstores are great ways to travel without leaving your home. There are two books that I believe are at the root of my worldtrip. An atlas with stickers and a 'passport' for Sinterklaas (a Dutch tradition in December) or a birthday and a gift at high school graduation.

My first inspiration was brand new in 1996 and I think it is out of print these days. The Do-It-Yourself Atlas by Sally Hewitt. Believe it or not, this book taught me how to read a map. Let me explain that. The pages in the atlas had the familiar rooster. And the stickers that came with the book, had a code on them: page number, a letter and a number. That's how the White House landed on page 9 in box F5. As a little girl I travelled around the world by sticking stickers and reading the rooster. Along the way I read about geisers in Iceland, that Hawaii consists of vulcanic islands and that they eat raw fish in Japan and call it sushi....

Years later I received the second book that would root my RTW-trip: 25 world routes you have to do, by maybe the best known traveller in The Netherlands, Floortje Dessing. She presents travel shows on Dutch TV. 

Besides reading her inspirational and well written travel stories, I learned about a RTW-ticket for the first time. The RTW-ticket I already got, my own travel stories are on their way!

10x Reiskriebels: reisgidsen en blogs - 10x get the Travelbugs going: travel guides and blogs

Een mixje van tijdschriften, reisprogramma's, reisgidsen en het enorme internet, bronnen van inspiratie, praktische tips en de reden dat mijn wenslijstje aan bestemmingen maar blijft groeien.
Met mijn wereldreis in het vooruitzicht, heb ik naast mijn bed een lekker leesstapeltje en op mijn computer verzamel ik inspirerende en handige webadressen. Hier zijn 10 aanraders om de reiskriebels van te krijgen (een mix van Engelse en Nederlandse boeken blogs).

1. Lonely Planet (Engels)
Deze Amerikaanse reisgidsen zijn wereldwijd de grootste vriend van menig reiziger. Praktisch, maar lang niet meer alleen voor de budget backpacker.
Online zijn 'Need to know' en 'Tips en Articles' mijn favoriete tabjes (check rechts bovenaan als je een bestemming ingetypt hebt .  En als ik nog een reisvraag over welk onderwerp of bestemming dan ook dan kan ik terecht op het thorn tree forum, waar de reiscommunity samen komt.
Voor mijn wereldreis heb ik de gidsen Iceland, Korea en Discover Canada (de Discover-reeks zijn gidsen met meer foto's en volledig in kleur).

2. Rough Guides (Engels en Nederlands)
Rough Guides is ook praktisch en voor alle budgetten. Vergeleken met de Lonely Planet gidsen hebben de bezienswaardigheden geen eigen kopjes, maar staan ze aangegeven in de tekst (per provincie, stad, wijk). Ik vind hun kaarten en plattegronden net iets fijner. En sinds 2010 worden ze ook in het Nederlands uitgegeven. Drie jaar geleden, tijdens mijn eerste lange reis alleen heb ik bijna geleefd op mijn Rough Guide van Taiwan. Hoewel de gidsen niet in full-colour gebracht worden, is de website een groot visueel spektakel (en ook nog praktisch).
Voor mijn reis heb ik de gidsen Taiwan (die zijn waarde al bewezen heeft), Japan en The USA.

3. Dominiscus reisgisden (Nederlands)
En dan specifiek de 'In kaart' serie. Heb je nog een stedentripje op de planning staan, dan raad ik deze super lichte gidsjes met uitvouwbare pagina's aan.
Reiskriebels steken de kop op bij het bladeren door het gratis digitale magazine.
Voor mijn reis neem ik die van New York mee die ik gehad heb met Sinterklaas.

4. National Geographic (Engels en Nederlands) 

National Geographic (vooral bekend van de tv-zender), heeft ook mooie kleuren gidsen met ontzettend veel achtergrondinformatie en een geweldig reismagazine met prachtige foto's. Op de website is de 'I heart my city' reeks een favoriet en de foto's zijn jaloersmakend.

5. Bradt Travel guides (Engels) 

Voor de meer ongewone en specifieke reizen. Dus voor mijn geplande treinreis door de Verenigde Staten is er de USA by Rail gids (door John Pitt) die ik van mijn ouders gehad heb.

6. GQTrippin (Engels) 

Op deze blog delen Gerard en Kieu hun reisverhalen (eten is een favoriet onderwerp), maar ik ben vooral groot fan van hun handige planning, inpak en budgettips.

7. Reismeisje (Nederlands)

Deze jonge dame werkt, spaart en reist zich de wereld rond en deelt vervolgens fijne tips en mooie, grappige verhalen.

8. Goats on the road (Engels)

Die naam! Ik vind 'm geweldig. Dit Canadese stel backbackt (bijna) constant en delen hun reisverhalen, tips en verzamelen alles in hun Budget guides.

9. Nomadic matt (Engels)

Deze meneer is al zeer bekend in reisbloggend land. Hij heeft inmiddels een aantal reisboeken op zijn naam staan.  Zijn site biedt een hele rits aan inspirerende artikelen en handige tips.

10. Savoir Faire Abroad (Engels)

Een beetje meer luxe dan de hardcore backpack blogs die op dit moment beter bij mijn budget passen. Deze Canadese vond ik op zoek naar reistips en bezienswaardigheden in, hoe kan het ook anders, Canada.

A coctail of magazines, travelprogramms, travelguides and the ever expanding internet are sources for inspiration, practical tips and the main reason why my wishlist of travel destinations keeps growing. 

My RTW-trip is comming up and on my bedside there's a small pile of travel guides and on my computer I collect inspirational and handy web addresses.
Here are 10 travel guides and blogs that get your travel bugs going (it's a mixture of English and Dutch sources). If you have any tips, leave them in a comment down this post. Next week more on my travel route!

1. Lonely Planet (English)

These American travelguides are the best friend of travelers world wide. Practical, and not serving budget backbackers only anymore. Online I love the 'Need to know' and 'Tips and Articles' sections (check in the upper right corner when you've entered a destination). And if there are any travel questions left, I would turn to the travel community on the Thorn Tree Forum. 

For my RTW-trip I bought: Iceland, Korea and Discover Canada (the Discover-line have more visuals and are full-colour guides).

2. Rough Guides (English and Dutch)
Rough Guides are also practial and suit all travelbudets. Compared to the Lonely Planet guides, the sights do not have their own subtitles, but are taken in with the text (per province, city, neighbourhood). I also like their maps a little more. 

Three years ago, on my first long term solo trip, I lived off my Rough Guide on Taiwan. 

While the guides do not have a full colour version, their website is an absolute feast for the eyes (yet practical).
For my RTW-trip I bought: Taiwan (which has already proved to be awesome), Japan and The USA.

3. Dominiscus reisgisden (Dutch)
I'm not sure these guides are available international (send me a note if you find one!).

Especially the 'mapped-series'. If you're planning a city trip, I would recommend these super light-weight guides with fould out maps and pages. Via their website you can also enjoy their free digital magazine which will get your travel bugs going. 

For my RTW-trip I was gifted the New York guide.

4. National Geographic (English and Dutch) 

National Geographic (best know for their fab tc-channel), also publishes beautiful full-colour guides with lots of background information, as well as an  awesome travel magazine with wonderful photo's. Their 'I heart my city' articles are my favorite on their website which is filled with the top of the bill photography.

5. Bradt Travel guides (English) 

For more unusual and specific travels. So, for my planned train travel through the United Stad, I was gifted the USA by Rail guide (written by John Pitt) by my parents. 

6. GQTrippin (English) 

On their blog, Gerard en Kieu share their travel stories (food is the main topic), but I fell in love with their handy, planning, packing and budgetting tips.

7. Reismeisje (Dutch)

This young lady works, saves and travels around the world and then shares great tips and fun and beautiful stories. 

8. Goats on the road (Engels)

That name! I think it's awesome. This Canadian couple backpacks (almost) continiously and share their stories, tips and collect all their knowledge in their Budget guides.

9. Nomadic matt (Engels)

This man is quite well known in the travel community. He even has written some travelbooks. On his website there are many inspirational articles and handy tips.

10. Savoir Faire Abroad (Engels)

A little more luxe than the hardcore backpack blogs that fit my budet at the moment. This bloggin' Canadian lady I found while searching for, travel tips and sights to see in, you may guess, Canada.
