Eten in Rome 5 tips - 5 tips for eating in Rome

Eten in Rome 5 tips - 5 tips for eating in Rome

This is my bilingual travel blog, so please scroll down for the English post.

Mocht je weten hoe deze broodjes heten, let me know!

Ris Café (Piazza del Risorgimento 16, 00192 Roma, Tel.06 39754330, Metro: Ottaviano)
Ristorante La Pecora Allegra (Via Soana 8, 00183 Roma, tel.

----------------------------------

Rome was the first trip I made without my parents (but with my school class). Since then, I've been back 3 times. Each visit has shown another side of this ancient city, thanks to other travel mates and different travel goals and reasons to visit. But it's the people and the food that combine into my best memories from the Italian capital.

This friday and saturday night I went out for dinner with friends with whom I also made two out of the four trips to Rome. So, to stay on this topic: 5 tips for eating in Rome.

1. Enjoy all the amazing Italian Ice cream.
I eat the best ice cream in Italy. Although there's plenty of places in The Netherlands where I can get some Italian ice cream, I won't buy one for months. To chose which taste I'd like is so much harder in Rome when your looking at the packed and flowing buckets of colourful and decorated ice cream.
Go for the long line in which the Italians are waiting.

2. Toasted snack
It may not be the most Italian thing to do, but when in Rome, I enjoy a toasted like bread with melted cheese and ham. I think they just call them sandwiches, but they are put in a toaster for just a few seconds. That's what provides the nice crispy layer without making it a real bite. Nothing special, but a good snack in between and good for the budget (between 2-4 euro). You can find them in small bars and cafés and trucks like the one on the photo above.

3. When in Rome do as the Romans do
We rented an appartment on one of my trips. It was near the subway station Re di Roma and there were quite a few good, budget friendly and local restaurants around. I loved the risotto and had the most heavenly tiramisu from a small bakery there.
If you'd like to eat in the city center, make sure you avoid the places where they offer the menu in more than two languages and that are up and running around six. Most Italians eat their evening meal at 8 to be early. For extra security, listen whether you hear more Italian rather than other languages around the place.

Three places I had some great food:
Ris Café (Piazza del Risorgimento 16, 00192 Roma, Tel.06 39754330, Metro: Ottaviano)
Ristorante La Pecora Allegra (Via Soana 8, 00183 Roma, tel. 0670450869, Metro: Re di Roma)
Euro pizza (Via Satrico 81, Metro: Re di Roma) for a nice take away pizza and they have some other nice snacks as well. Such as mozzarelline: fried mozzarella (you can get 6 for about 2 Euro).

4. Coffee
Not very often, but every once in a while I swop my tea or water for a cappuccino or espresso. It's there two coffee variations I'd recommend in Rome. Do as the Italians do and have breakfast at the bar with an espresso and read your newspaper.

5. Picnic in het park
You could apply this one world wide, probably but the Italians (and let's not forget about the French!) in particular are good at this game. On a Sunday afternoon like the sunny one we have today: find yourself a nice spot at a local park and enjoy some snack and sunlight.
