New England Aquarium Walvistour - New England Aquarium Whale watching tour.

Looking for English? Please scroll down a bit!

Whale watching Boston

------------------------------------------ ENGLISH VERSION ------------------------------------

A whale taking a big breath just before he leaves for the deep, right next to the boat. During my whale watching tour with the New England Aquarium in Boston, I was lucky enough to watch humpback whale Hancock doing so. After a boat ride of about an hour with strong winds, we arrived at the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary.

From there it took a while before spotting our first whale. Nature does not go by a touring schedule. But the different touring companies, keep in touch with each other about whale spots. Besides that, there are always a few experts  from the aquarium joining the tour and who are trained in spotting whales and giving directions during the tour. It is a very exciting feeling to try to spot one of those animals yourself. Even though whales are the biggest animals on the planet, they're surprisingly difficult to spot when you're facing the big blue ocean.

Ahead we saw the tail of a fin whale going under, just before spotting a humpback whale closer by. The pattern on the back of it's tail told the experts that this was Hancock. We were able to follow him around for about 15 minutes, making him the star of this particular whale watching tour.  Just before our catamaran returned to the Boston harbor we said goodbye to the diving tail of another hump back whale, Measles.

I walked around with a huge smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Tips for whale watching
  • Bring an extra vest, jacket or both (for the cooler months). I was happy I brought along my vest. My jacket kept another girl warm who was only wearing a t-shirt.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. Out on the ocean, you're surrounded by water that reflects the sun. And despite the fact that the wind can make you feel cold, it's easy to catch a sunburn.
  • Something to eat and drink. Taking the tour of the New England Aquarium allowed me to  bring my own food and drink. That's a good idea, since the tours take 3 to 4 hours. But please don't litter, because there's already too much plastic in the ocean (taking sea creatures life's).

Below you find Hancock taking a deep breath (including commentary from a fellow passenger who obviously had a good time).

California Zephyr (Chicago- San Francisco): Tips

Looking for English? Right after the jump!

----------------------------             ENGLISH VERSION               ------------------------------------------

In the category 'the journey is the destination': a trainroute covering over 3900 kilometer, crossing 7 States and 2 time zones. The California Zephyr brings you from Chicago to San Francisco (or in de opposite direction)  in 51 hours. But one of the things I've learned from taking some trains in the United States is that delay is rule rather than the exception.  My ride lasted for almost 60 hours. Instead of having diner in San Francisco, I was given a free diner and snacks on the train.

Despite this huge delay I would absolutely recommend you to add this train ride to your wish list. It's a feast for the eye looking out of the window, which I showed in a photopost back in July when I was on the road.

The route
After a few fantastic days of city exploring, I left Chicago.  Until Denver the view is dominated by endless farmland, suburbs and industry towns. But then, you go into the mountains. A little bit of the Rocky Mountains, followed by more mountain ranges, canyons, valleys, the Utah desert and entering California through the Sierra Mountains.
The California Zephyr doesn't go all the way to the heart of San Francisco. In emeryville you transfer to a connecting bus service which makes several stops in San Francisco (including Financial District, Fisherman's Warf and Ferry Building).

Food and drinks
You can join for meals in the Diner car. Take note of the announcements over the speaker when to apply.
But for budget reasons, I brought some of my own food and combined that with snacks and drinks from the café car. My foodie bag included Cookies, fruit, corn flakes (for which I bought milk or yoghurt), water and juice. I would recommend the small pizza $6 (€5) from the café for dinner. It smelled delicious, was smoking hot and tasted good.

Sleeping on the train
'You do have a bed for two nights on the train, right?' 'And how about a shower?' Those two questions are asked most when I tell people about this part of my world trip. I haven't seen a shower, but there are quite spacious 'dressing rooms' with two sinks and a separate toilet. There are some bedding options, but they come with quite a price tag (including all meals though). As a backpacker on a budget, I was happy in coach class with a spacious chair (about business class airplane size). It definitely helped that I'm smaller that the average person too. And I was lucky that my train was not fully booked, so for most of the journey I could use two chairs.
Must haves: earplugs, neck pillow, a hipbelt for your valuebles and something to keep yourself entertained when you've seen enough desert out of your window.

How much does it cost?
My ticket for a reserved Coach class seat (including the connecting bus ride to San Francisco) cost me $164,- (€ 123,-). Plus about $20,- (€ 15,-) on food and drinks on the train.
Because I was traveling during the more busy Summer season (July), I booked my ticket 6 months before via the Amtrak website. Of course the best priced seats go fast, so that was also a reason to book early. The Amtrak website also provides a lot of information on menus and even a free downloadable route guide.

Bericht uit hawaii

Looking for english? Scroll down a bit!

------ENGLISH VERSION----

Crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and palmtrees. You would think that ittv was alittle paradise place, If it wasn't for the fact that I'm writing surrounded by traffic noise, in the middle of hotels and shopping centers.
Thankfully Oahu has its paradise like places too. Like hanuama bay. The  most famous place to snorkel in hawaii, so yes, it is slightly toeristy. But as soon as you duck your head under water, the human noise disappears and you find yourself floating between coral reef and tropical fish. I could feel a very strong current so I stayed in the bay.
Two hours of pure joy. And getting a sunburn, despite applying sunscreen twice, but it was all worth it.

A little closer to waikiki where I'm staying,  is diamond head. A distinct crater you can hike up to for stunning views. It's about 1, 5 hour round trip, if you keep up the pace. I had to, because I entered the park at aroud 4 in the afternoon and the gates close at 6.

Another bit of paradise I found on the north coast. The two hour busride follows the ocean lined with distinct vulcanos. I stepped off at Laniakea beach to see honu (sea turtles) eat their seaweed lunch.
What a beautiful animals they are and with such good colours to disappear into their rocky environment. It did make me sad to see that people could not respect two simple rules: stay at a 6 feet distance and don't touch. Just because they wanted their picture.  I made full use of my zoomfunction of my camera instead.
Also at the north coast, the small town of hale'iwa. Good food,  little shops and lining up for the famous matsumoto shaved ice, served in rainbow colours.

Before leaving for japan tomorrow,  I visit pearl harbor today. Be still at the uss arizona memorial today.

Bericht uit San Francisco

Looking for English? Scroll down a bit!

-------'ENGLISH VERSION-------

Around midnight I tried to have a conversation with the man wo fixed me and his family a free ride on one of the trolleys.  Only problem is that these famous cars are rather noisy, so it didn't even come close to a  conversation. But I could thank him before our ways parted at grant street.

After one night at another hostel, I went to the small and friendly pacific tradewinds hostel. From there I've been exploring this wonderful city. And despite the crazy, scary steep streets, I've done that mainly by foot.
Lombard street for example is so steep at some point that the road zigzags down. This unusual sight attract busloads of tourists.

A lot more fun it is to do some shopping and people and seal watching at Pier 39. Even while there are not so many sea lions out at the docks these days, since it is breeding season. That means that most are somewhere further south, raising their pups. In august, the seals turn back. Another tourist activity available in August again, is a tour to the famous Alcatraz.
But the city has plenty more to offer. The golden gate bridge, huge park with the same name and shop browsing in the neighborhoods of mission, castro, union square and china town.

My personal highlight was the visit to the national park lands end and cliff house. Beautiful cliffs, hunting birds and rock beaches.
Starting tomorrow I'll be seeing more of the beautiful Western American nature and even camp in there. Not travelling solo for a week and be part of a Trek America tour group.
Comming from los Angeles next week!

Fotopost -california zephyr treinreis

----ENGLISH VERSION------

The California Zephyr route from Chicago to San Francisco is already scheduled for a hefty 51 hours. A delay of 7 hours, turned that in almost 60 hours on the train. This delay was caused by mechanical problems and the many freight trains that we had to wait for (that's the rule on the railroad).

But in America you don't take the train to get quickly or cheaply from one place to the other (airplanes or driving a car usually is faster and cheaper). You do take the train for the splendid views that you get along the way.

In 2, 5 day you cover over 3900 km through a huge variety of landscapes and 2 timezones. The train stops at 35 stations (you can stretch your legs at some stations for about 5-10 minutes) in 7 states.
It's impossible to find the words to describe how beautiful this train ride was, so here's a photo post.

Bericht uit Chicago

Looking for English? Scroll down a bit!

----ENGLISH-----

Two hours behind schedule,  the train slowly rolls into Chicago. It's great to get a breath of fresh air. And warm up a bit, since the train was freezing thanks to the airco.
After a short fight woth the ticket machine I easily find my way to the Holiday Jones hostel.

I find my home for the nexr few days at the third floor and after a wonderful shower I step outside to discover the neighborhood. I end up wandering through one of those big American supermarkets. Although, still small to american standards, because its in a city. A slightly bigger one, I visit when I'm in wheeling. In boston I met a lovely lady,  who brought me in touch with one of her friends. Jane and kathleen had just recently made a big trip with stops along Australia,  new-Zealand,  Polynesia,  hawaii and Vancouver.
After viewing the photos with friends of hers, we watch the Dutch loose the lengthy world cup semi-final.

The other days I enjoy chicago in a very relax tempo. My fist stop is the visitor center, located at the former public library with a beautiful dome inside.
Just wondering the streets is great already. There's a welth of architecture in this city, because downtown is built after the big Chicago fire of 1871.
I went for a bird's eye view from the highest and most touristy willis tower. You can also step into a glass box, looking straight down at this city if you are not scared of heights. Two other options are the hancock tower where you can do some wonderful shopping and the ferrieswheel at navy pier.
The big lake at which the city is situated, makes that it even has a bit of a harbor city atmosphere.

So, I take to the water too. At 65 dollar I get to peddle the chicago river with 15 other kayakkers. Sadly enough, you get a very good look at all the trash that gets dumped into the water. Plastic bottles, bags, banner, foamboard and a dead rat. Thankfully other animals are a better sight. Wild goose, a mother duck with her little ones in tow and one bird aimed its poo right at a fellow kayakker.

Chicago is also the main railhub in the United states. And I too am about to board another train. Heading West on the California zephyr for about 52 hours. It is said to be one of the most scenic routes to San Francisco.

Bericht uit Boston - message from Boston

Looking for English?  Scroll down a bit!

-------ENGLISH VERSION-------

Independence day in boston was in a hurry this year. Arthur the first tropical storm of the year was making its way along the east coast. Boston pops, the 'biggest independence party' was towed to the 3rd of July.
I had a great evening waving flags, listening live music and watching fireworks.  And all from free VIP-seats.
The official independence day wasfilked with rain. That lead to haning in the hostel for the most part of the day.  Luckily I had done my fair share of sightseeing already. Mainly following the 4 km long freedomtrail. For the walk I rewarded myself with a delicious piece of Boston cream pie in little italy.

Two other sights were a little out of the way of the freedom trail, so I did them yesterday. Trinity church, a 18tb century church covered in detailed artworks and the Mary Baker Eddy library. Not for books this time, but for the fascinating mapparium.
Enter this hall and you find yourself in the middle of the world. No photo's though, which was a bit of a pity because it was so beautiful. One othe bizarre effect was hearing myself in surround sound.

The highlight of my stay in boston I found on, or actually under water when watching whales.
From the New England aquarium boats taje you to the stellwegen bank. When we arrived there we were lucky enough to enjoy the humpback whales measles and hancock. And even spotting the tail of a fin whale going under. Star of the show was hancock. He came up every 3 minutes or so to take a breath of fresh air. Even right next to the boat a few times. Also thanks to the great steering skills of the captain. I'm not able to share videos at the moment, but I hope to do so later.

In just a few hours I hop on a train for the first half of my ride to the West. Travel time from Boston to chicago: 19 hours. And an hour time difference (earlier).

Bericht uit washington - message from washington

Looking for English? Scroll down a bit!

Het american art museum and portrait gallery.

-------ENGLISH VERSION -------

Washington DC is big, with broad, long lanes, lots of green, museums, monuments and sticky hot temperatures around 30 degrees celcius and very humid. Thankfully there are the many free museums to spend the hottest hours of the day.

My first stop is the American history museum.  It completes the story started in Baltimore,  the real star-sprangled-banner from Fort McHenry. The rest of the museum is dedicated to pop culture, presidents, the civil rights movement and tye many wars that this relatively young country has fought.

Another popular museum is the air and space museum.  Complete airplanes are in display here, including the one from the Wright brothers, inventors of modern aircrafts.
And things that wrnt to soace, or that were taken from space. Like sand from the moon.

Yesterday I visited the american art and portrait gallery. Beautiful landscapes and portraits of cultural icons of the 20th century.
When it finally starts to cool down slightly, it is well worth to do a long walk around the many monuments and memorials. The capitol, the white house, lincoln memorial and the quiet pentagon memorial. Basically the only where you are aloud to take pictures near the pentagon.
3 more days to enjoy this city before I board a night train to Boston.

Bericht uit Baltimore-message from baltimore

--------ENGLISH -----

Tripled advice (guidebook, hostel and another buspassenger) got me on a taxi from the busstation to downtown. Not because it's a long walk, but rather that it's located in an area with empty industrial buildings. Baltimore just has this reputation of being a dangerous.
But I also heard from other travellers that things are changing. An up and comming city, with a vivid art scene and interesting historic sites. So, I was curious about this city.
After a short taxi ride of 12 dollar plus tip, I step into the mansion which houses the hostel.

It almost feels like I've arrived in a five star hotel, because of the decor. Of course arriving in the shared dorm, puts my feet back on the ground. But still, Hi-hostel in Baltimore is one of the most homely feeling hostels I've run into up 'till now. That's also thanks to the mixed crowd of convention people and travellers. It makes for a great atmosphere with good conversations over homecooked meals with ingredients from the farmers market and a drink. And watching soccer with freshly popped popcorn.

But the cozy hostel isn't the only surprise. Another sursprise was the harbor. A great mix of shops, restaurants, old ships, an aquarium and some museums.
One of the museums I visited was the american visionary art museum where works of mainly self taught artists is on display. A walk through the museum feels like a crazy, beautiful rollercoaster ride.
Modern art can also be found outside of the museum walls. The art tour of the hostel leads us past run down buildings and colourful wall paintings. The art mixes well with the old brick buildings you find all over town.

The city has an important place in american history. Especially fort McHenry.
The British attacked the city on september 13 1814. In the battle of baltimore the coty was bombed for 25 hours, but the man at the fort stood their grounds. When the american francis scott key saw the american flag appear through the clouds after the battle. That moment inspired him to write the poem 'defence of Fort M'henry'. The tittle changed to 'the star-sprangled banner and it became the anthem of the united states in 1931.
The museum of the fort offers a short film on the history of the fort and information about the war, the writer of the peom and the flag.
The surviving flag is kept in washington and I hope to see it there in the next comming days.

Today I say goodbye to the city of baltimore. This harbor city has a piece of my heart, thanks to the great food (world famous crab cakes at faidleys, pasta in little Italy and lively markets), art, history but most of all the great hostel people I met (thank you and safe travels to all!)
