New England Aquarium Walvistour - New England Aquarium Whale watching tour.

Een walvis vlak naast de boot een hap adem zien halen om vervolgens de diepte weer op te zoeken. Bultrug Hancock, had duiken van 3 minuten tijdens mijn whale wachting tour vanaf het New England Aquarium inBoston. Na een boottocht van ongeveer een uurtje met veel harde wind, kwamen we aan in het Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. 

Het duurde even voor we de eerste walvis spotten. De natuur doet natuurlijk niet aan tour schema's. Maar de verschillende tour organisaties houden elkaar op de hoogte en daarnaast zijn er altijd een aantal professionals van het aquarium mee die goed getraind zijn in het spotten van de walvissen en je tijdens de tocht op de hoogte houden en aanwijzingen geven waar de walvissen te zien zijn. Het is ontzettend leuk en spannend om zelf ook op zoek te gaan. Want ondanks dat het de grootste dieren op aarde zijn, zijn ze lastig te spotten in een uitgestrekte oceaan. 

In de verte zagen we net de staart onder gaan van een gewone vinvis.  Maar niet veel later werden we getrakteerd op een bultrug. Het patroon op zijn staart gaf prijs dat dit Hancock was. Die hebben we een kwartier lang kunnen volgen en dat maakte van hem de ster van deze walvistour. Vlak voor de catamaran weer richting de haven ging konden we nog even gedag zeggen tegen de ondergaande staart van Measles, een andere bultrug.

De rest van de dag heb ik met een enorme glimlach op mijn gezicht rondgelopen.

Tips voor een walvisspot tochtje

• Neem een extra vest, jack of beide (in de koudere maanden) mee. Ik was blij dat ik een extra vest mee had. Mijn jack heb ik op de boot uitgeleend aan een ander meisje die het erg koud had in een t-shirt.
• Zonnebrand en zonnebril. Midden op het water ben je omgeven door water dat de zon weerkaatst en ondanks dat het door de frisse zeewind niet zo warm aanvoelt, kun je wel gemakkelijk  verbranden.
• Iets te eten en te drinken. Bij de tour van het New England Aquarium mocht je gewoon eten en drinken meenemen. Dat is wel zo lekker, want de walvistocht duurde 3 tot 4 uur. Maar laat geen afval zwerven, er zit al te veel plastic in de oceanen (waar verschillende dieren in stikken).

Onderaan de post vind je Hancock die naar adem hapt (en commentaar van een medepassagier die er duidelijk ook van genoot).

A whale taking a big breath just before he leaves for the deep, right next to the boat. During my whale watching tour with the New England Aquarium in Boston, I was lucky enough to watch humpback whale Hancock doing so. After a boat ride of about an hour with strong winds, we arrived at the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. 

From there it took a while before spotting our first whale. Nature does not go by a touring schedule. But the different touring companies, keep in touch with each other about whale spots. Besides that, there are always a few experts  from the aquarium joining the tour and who are trained in spotting whales and giving directions during the tour. It is a very exciting feeling to try to spot one of those animals yourself. Even though whales are the biggest animals on the planet, they're surprisingly difficult to spot when you're facing the big blue ocean. 

Ahead we saw the tail of a fin whale going under, just before spotting a humpback whale closer by. The pattern on the back of it's tail told the experts that this was Hancock. We were able to follow him around for about 15 minutes, making him the star of this particular whale watching tour.  Just before our catamaran returned to the Boston harbor we said goodbye to the diving tail of another hump back whale, Measles.

I walked around with a huge smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Tips for whale watching

• Bring an extra vest, jacket or both (for the cooler months). I was happy I brought along my vest. My jacket kept another girl warm who was only wearing a t-shirt.
• Sunscreen and sunglasses. Out on the ocean, you're surrounded by water that reflects the sun. And despite the fact that the wind can make you feel cold, it's easy to catch a sunburn.
• Something to eat and drink. Taking the tour of the New England Aquarium allowed me to  bring my own food and drink. That's a good idea, since the tours take 3 to 4 hours. But please don't litter, because there's already too much plastic in the ocean (taking sea creatures life's).

Bericht uit Boston - message from Boston

De amerikaanse onafhankelijkheidsdag had dit jaar een beetje haast in Boston. Met dank aan Arthur, de eerste tropische storm van het seizoen. Boston pops, het 'grootste onafhankelijkheidsfeest' werd daarom naar 3 juli verplaatst.
Ik heb een heerlijk avondje vlaggetjes zwaaien, live muziek en vuurwerk gehad.
En dat allemaal vanaf een gratis VIP-stoeltje, aangeboden door een security guard.
De officiele onafhankelijksdag was vooral nat. Van de middag tot de avond stond de hemelse kraan open. Dus dat werd een middagje hostel hangen wa t de meeste bezienswaardigheden waren ook gesloten. gelukkig had ik de meeste al gezien met het volgen van de ongeveer 4 kilometer lange freedom trail. Met een heerlijk stuk boston cream pie in little italy als beloning.

Twee andere bezienswaardigheden lagen de andere kant op, dus die heb ik gister ochtend nog even meegepakt. Trinity church, een 18e eeuwse kerk met gedetaileerd interieur en de Mary Baker Eddy library. Maar niet voor de boeken, wel voor het fascinerende mapparium.
Waar jein een ruimte midden in een wereldbol staat. Helaas waren foto's niet toegestaan. het was namelijk prachtig. En een van de effecten is dat je jezelf in surroundsound kunt horen. En ja, dat is net zo bizar als dat het klinkt.

Het hoogtepunt was voor mij op, of eigenlijk bleef het grootste deel onder water, walvissen kijken.
Vanaf het New England aquarium gaan er boten naar de stellwegen bank. En daar hebben we mogen genieten van de bultruggen Measles en hancock. En in de verte zagen we ook nog een staart onder gaan van een gewone vinvis.
De ster van de show was toch wel Hancock. Om de 3 minuten kwam meneer een verse hap lucht halen. Een paar keer zelfs pal naast de boot. Mede door de goede stuurkunsten van de kapitein. Videos kan helaas niet uploaden vanaf m'n tablet dus die houden jullie nog te goed.

Zometeen stap ik op de trein voor het eerste deel van mijn tocht naar het Westen. Reistijd van Boston naar Chicago: 19 uur. en tijdsverschil van een uurtje eerder.

Independence day in boston was in a hurry this year. Arthur the first tropical storm of the year was making its way along the east coast. Boston pops, the 'biggest independence party' was towed to the 3rd of July.
I had a great evening waving flags, listening live music and watching fireworks.  And all from free VIP-seats.
The official independence day wasfilked with rain. That lead to haning in the hostel for the most part of the day.  Luckily I had done my fair share of sightseeing already. Mainly following the 4 km long freedomtrail. For the walk I rewarded myself with a delicious piece of Boston cream pie in little italy.

Two other sights were a little out of the way of the freedom trail, so I did them yesterday. Trinity church, a 18tb century church covered in detailed artworks and the Mary Baker Eddy library. Not for books this time, but for the fascinating mapparium.
Enter this hall and you find yourself in the middle of the world. No photo's though, which was a bit of a pity because it was so beautiful. One othe bizarre effect was hearing myself in surround sound.

The highlight of my stay in boston I found on, or actually under water when watching whales.
From the New England aquarium boats taje you to the stellwegen bank. When we arrived there we were lucky enough to enjoy the humpback whales measles and hancock. And even spotting the tail of a fin whale going under. Star of the show was hancock. He came up every 3 minutes or so to take a breath of fresh air. Even right next to the boat a few times. Also thanks to the great steering skills of the captain. I'm not able to share videos at the moment, but I hope to do so later.

In just a few hours I hop on a train for the first half of my ride to the West. Travel time from Boston to chicago: 19 hours. And an hour time difference (earlier).
