Bericht uit Montreal -Message from Montreal

Looking for English?  Scroll down a bit!

Mijn laatste stop in Canada, Montreal.

Eerste stop: New York!
----
My last stop in Canada,  Montreal. A huge city but with a historic center. Which disappointed me a bit. Or maybe i've gotten spoiled with the more atmospheric streets of quebec. The historic center actually consists of 2 long streets lined with beautiful old buildings indeed. But these streets are wide and filled with restaurants,  bars, tourist shops, galleries and designer shops.

One sight that definitely didn't disappoint was the famous notre dame basilica de montreal. I've seen my share of churches, but this one is now on my toplist. And for the entrance price of 5 dollar, you actually get a 2 for 1 deal. Behind the main cathedral there's a 'small' chapel. The contrast of the two couldn't be much bigger, but maybe it's just that which makes it so special.

Another place that would fit a sunday itinerary is a hike up to mont royal. The view will absolutely be worth your clim between all runners and other hikers. Just know that there's limited opportunities to fill your stomach up there (an automat and a small bistro). So, bring your own picnic. There's no shortage on benches and pretty places to spread a blanket to chill and relax.

Another favored way to spend time is to go to a hockey game. I was given a free ticket by chance to see the out playing team on screen in the stadium. The couple from whom I'd gotten the ticket apparently changed their mind about watching the game as they never showed up. But I had a great time anyway with the very well filled stadium. Sadly enough, no after party as the habs lost this knock out final.

As comes with a big city are numerous museums. Many historic sites are tuned in museums. Like montreals 'birthplace'. But there are also museums on science, space and environment. On one of my two days with some rainshowers (stil pretty hot and humid in temperature), I visited the museum of fine arts. 4 buildings, connected by underground walkways.
The exhibition dreamscapes from Michel lemieux and victor pilon, who worked for the montreal born act, cirque du soleil (among others) was impressive. So impressive that after a short budget check, I bought a ticket to see their current show kurios.

It was 65 dollar welk spend. Clowns, jugglers, all kinds of acrobats and an invissible tiger. They were all present in the classic tent. In between the well designed decor, costumes and kind of to follow story, you keep letting out 'ooh' and 'aaah' from amazement.

I've enjoyed this big, friendly, beautiful country and even started to love it a bit. My bags are packed again and in a short time i'm on another airplane. The united states are waiting for me. First stop: new york!

Indrukwekkende montmorancy waterval - impressive montmorancy falls

Looking for english? Scroll down a bit!

---------
A fresh cold wind blows right in my face when I step outside. Luckily my destination is just around the corner. At the local supermarket, almost next to the hi-hostel in Quebec where I'm staying I buy a packed lunch for later today.
Around 10 in the morning I hang around the the reception area with some other people who signed up for the hostel tour. 4 french people plus a french guide means: french is the way to go. With some translation for me.
We were supposed to go on a bicycle ride, but there's too much wind. As the only dutch girl in the group, I join the canadian/french standard and we go to the falls by bus.
For 5, 50 Canadian dollars we buy ourselves a daypass, that we use as a return trip. After a short 20-minute ride, I can hear the falls already. Not before long, we see the water falling down, right next to us. I believe I wrote in my previous post that these falls are 10 meter higher than the niagara falls. Well actually the montmorency falls stand 30 meter higher. Although, less wide than the famous southern falls.
Even so these falls make an impression on me. Maybe it's because they're not sandwiched in between the entertainment buzz.
During winter,  these falls usually freeze completely.  Which makes for great ice climbing as well as some picture perfect images I guess.

We cross the falls via the suspension bridge. Within the green field we're walking, there some history sitting atop. In 1759 the British didn't succeed in opening up the way to the city of Quebec. Which they later did succesfully at abrahams plains,  near the city wall.

We take our lunch back to the hostel. By then it's cold, windy and raining outside. Which results in hostelbound activities, such as reading and playing pingpong games with the excursion group from the hostel.
At night we go out for dinner. Great place, but packed to the max, since it's hockey game on.  Team Montreal canadians, better known as the habs against the new york rangers team.
We have a great evening with good food, and a winning team. I think I became a habs fan that evening. More about hockey in my montreal post later this week.

Over eten gesproken.

Bonjour, excusez moi and merci, its all French around me. Obviously, I've arrived in french Canada. The historic city of quebec is goining to be my home for the next four days. While I'm walking up hill with my 10kg backpack, it reminds me that I come from one of the flattest countries in the world.

Despite the daily work-out of stairs and hills, I like this city a lot. It's a great city to just walk around for a bit.
After the loneliness of my jail night and the long bus ride, I find myself in the company of a n american mexican and a puertorican girl
discovering the city. The old oartvof the city, we visit with the free hostel tour. A great introduction to the city. It's buzzing with people in the small allies. Especially in the paris looking petit champlain.
The next day I return on my own to browse the mix of touristy and artistic shops.

The city of Quebec has perserved it's defensive walls. Most obviously at the citadel. Right next door are the plains of abraham, nowadays a beautiful green space for the city.
It's also a lot of fun to take the ferry to the small town across the river, levis.
Although, there's not much to see. So, you could take a single ride and just stay on the ferry.
I took a return trip and had a nice lunch break.

Now that we're on the food topic. Poutine. It's a special dish served in quebec. I had a 2.0-version at le chick shack and liked it so much that I returned for the big bowl with beef.

Nearby Quebec city, you can make a trip to the montmorency waterfalls. Ten meter higher than the famous niagara falls and set in a mire natural environment. It made for a great day with other hostellers. You can read about it on monday, while I'm exloring old montreal today.

Bericht uit Ottawa - message from Ottawa

Looking for English? Scroll down a bit!

----
I wanted to lock myself up in jail for two nights actually. Sadly enough, the hi-hostel in the old ottawa jail was fully booked. I didn't know about the marathon happening this weekend. Thankfully the people at the front desk help me out wonderfully, booking my other stays.
After one night in my own cell I get to explore this city and then go on a bus to quebec at midnight.

The capital city of canada isn't as overwelming as what I might expected from it. You can visit the parliament building on a free tour. I joined in, but didn't finish it. Instead I scared the security guards by almost fainting. The long bus ride from the day before combined with a bit too many touristst packed togheter on this hot day m just isn't my thing apparently.
After chilling out in the grass and having some lunch I felt much better.

After a short walk at the historic rideau locks, I take a water taxi to the other side of the river.
Ottawa isn't short on museums, but I would recommend the museum of civilization. And specifically the canada hall.
While going through time you walk right throuh the middle of villages and even a departure hall of an airport.

It's close to diner time when I head to byward market. You could say it's a smaller version of London's famous covent garden. Sunny days like these are perfect for the mix of small shops, food and street artists. I have a huge bowl of traditional taiwanese wonton soup. Through dinner I have a great chat with sophie, who lives in ottawa, but hadn't had a soup at wang's noodle place eighter.
After some more strolling around I spend the rest of my waiting time at the hostels lobby writing and reading.

At a nightly half past two I arrive at the busstation of Montreal. Canada has been very safe up until now, the security guard walks his rounds, there are cleaners doing their job and a few other people wait with me for the first busses that leave at 6 in the morning.

The bus arrives right on time and when I wake up after almost 3 hours, we have almost arrived in quebec city. That's where I am right now and you can read about what I've been seeing and doing next saturday. And I will be in Montreal then, my last stop before I move on from canada.

Bericht uit Guelph - message from Guelph

Looking for English? Scroll down a bit!

We eten heerlijk ijs bij the boathouse.

-----
It's about 7 in the morning when I wave goodbye to the great toronto hostel. Just a short moment later and me and my backpack are on a bus for two hours.

Since January i've been in touch via email with Lynda, a cousin of my mum. We agreed to meet at the busstation of Guelph. I'm a little early, but it doesn't take long before a lady comes walking over who is, like me looking for someone. That must be lynda! It doesn't take long before I receive a warm welcome hug from her.

We start off with a cup of coffee and tea for me at Tim Hortons. A canadian coffee chain you find anywhere. We have a lot to talk about as well as getting to know each other better with every other chat.
The canadian poet and colonel in the First World War, John McCrae is probably the most famous person in Guelph. He is best known for his poem 'in flanders fields'. His house of birth has become a small memorial museum, focussing on his work and information on and in rememberance of the First World War. After that we have a great ice cream at the boat house. It's almost as good and generously served as the real gelati in italy.

After two days of chatting, laughing, looking at photos, relaxing and meeting with more family it's time to say goodbye. During the long bus ride (about 7 hours) to ottawa a smile comes on my face when I think of all the good memories.

Thanks lynda for your good care and the beautiful  handknitted scarf (it came in handy today in the windy city of quebec).

Niagara Falls

Looking for English? Scroll down for a bit!

--------------------
The train enters Niagara Falls Station after just over two hours train ride from downtown Toronto. And then I'm lost. A stack of folders and a ticket boot hidden in a corner. That's the welcome for the famous Niagara Falls.
Just wait for your bus ride to arrive at the heart of the tourist buzz. That's where it felt like a strange mixture of nature and amusement park.
I went straight to the most touristy thing you can do when you're down at Niagara Falls. It didn't take long for me to be all dressed up in a rain poncho on the top deck of the little boat.

Even although it's very touristy, I would recommend going on the boat ride. It's great to feel the fall's showers. And it's only from the boat that you can loop up to the falls realizing how tall they are.
After the boat ride I strolled over to the famous Horse Shoe part of the falls. I checked on the other attractions too, but decided to just enjoy the view on the falls with a quick lunch. I've had worse views to look at. After that I went for some shopping and found myself a nice bag.

On the train ride home I had a great chat with a lady from Philladelphia. She was on her way to visit her grandchildren. We had a great chat and the train arrived right on time at Toronto's Union Station. Which, according to the lady was an exception. Lucky us!

Bericht uit Canada: Toronto - Message from Canada: Toronto

Looking for English? Scroll down for a bit!

De tentoonstelling over de First Nation people was mooi opgezet.

Toronto was in ieder geval super tof!

---------------
My flight from Iceland landed with a delay on the rainy international airport of Toronto. This huge city is the first stop for the 20 days I have in Canada.
I stayed at the HI-Hostel at Church Street, with a church (St. James Church) right across the street, how fitting! It has a great central location, even so that I could walk over to most of the places.

The famous foodmarket St. Lawrence Market, for example was only one block away. A little bit of a longer walk, but very do-able was the thirty-minute or so, walk to China Town. Another great place to catch a good (and cheap!) meal. But it's also a great place to buy some Chinese souvenirs, fresh fruits and vegtables and visit Kensington market (hippie-like shops in and around Baldwin street) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). At AGO, I spend most of my time at the Canadian galleries. I'm in Canada after all...

Going up on the CN-tower I found a little bit expensive (32 dollar or so). Instead I visited another big museum, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). All though it was only a small part of the museum, I liked the exhibition on the First Nations. Most of the museum is dedicated to dinosaurs and other cultural exhibitions that take some time to wander through.

Toronto lays at Lake Ontario. You can walk along the water front or, go to the Toronto Islands (I didn't have time for that though).
But you can also go to the beach! And I did that at night. Not to go for a swim (way to cold for that) but to watch the fireworks on Victoria Day. And best of all, I didn't do that alone, I got to spend the evening with Melissa (not to be confused by younger sister) who I met in Rome four years ago and some of her friends. We also to a few cans of Steam Whisle beer with us. This beer is brewed at the hart of the Toronto city (almost next to the CN-tower). We had gone on a brewery tour, before going to the beach. And even for someone who doesn't drink beer so often, it was a great (and surprisingly tasty) tour! Also a thank you for the great tour guide with the biggest and coolest looking afro-hair-do I've seen so far.

Toronto has been great and at the moment I'm in Guelph for a family visit.
Saturday you can read about my most touristy experience I've had while on a day trip from Toronto: Niagara Falls.
